The trilogy is simple: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, with your save file carrying choices across all three. The wrinkles are the downloadable missions. In Mass Effect 1, Bring Down the Sky can go anywhere after you have the Normandy, ideally before Virmire. In Mass Effect 2, play Lair of the Shadow Broker once Liara's errands on Illium are done, then save Arrival for last, because it hands you straight to the prison cell Mass Effect 3 opens with.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, released May 14, 2021, remasters all three games with their single-player DLC and is the version to buy. Andromeda is a separate story with a new cast, set between Mass Effect 2 and 3 but needing no context from them.
Good to know
Pinnacle Station, the 2007 training-simulator DLC for Mass Effect 1, is missing from Legendary Edition because its source code was corrupted; a PC mod restores it and you lose little by skipping it. Legendary Edition also drops Mass Effect 3's co-op multiplayer, which fed the Readiness meter. Play Citadel in Mass Effect 3 as late as you can before the point of no return. BioWare announced the next game in December 2020 and it still has no name or date as of September 2026.
