About Mass Effect
Mass Effect is a trilogy about Commander Shepard from 2007 to 2012, followed by the separate Andromeda story set 600 years later in a new galaxy. The 2021 Legendary Edition bundles the trilogy with almost all DLC and is now the standard version.
This play order follows release order, which is also story order for the trilogy. Andromeda can be played after the trilogy or skipped without losing the main plot.
Good to know
New players should start with Mass Effect Legendary Edition. It contains Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 with updated visuals and unified character creation, and it replaces the originals.
The next Mass Effect was teased in 2020 and BioWare restated in November 2025 that it remains in development with no date or platforms. After EA's 2026 buyout, some former staff questioned its funding, but BioWare says work continues. Treat any 2027 or 2028 dates online as guesses.
