About Max Payne

Max Payne runs three games about a New York detective whose family murder pulls him into the Valkyr drug conspiracy. The 2001 original from Remedy sets the noir monologue and bullet time template, and Max Payne 2 from 2003 continues directly with Mona Sax and the Cleaners as a tighter sequel. Max Payne 3 from 2012 jumps to Rockstar's hands for a Sao Paulo bodyguard story years later with the shooting mechanics rebuilt.

Remedy and Rockstar are remaking the first two games as one Northlight title, in full production with no date after steady 2025 reports. Release order is story order across all three, so one list covers it. The comics backstory and the 2008 film stay outside the games path as optional extras.

Good to know

Play all three in release order. Max Payne 2 starts where the first ends and assumes its Valkyr fallout, while Max Payne 3 works as an epilogue years later with an older Payne. The remake will likely become the entry point once dated, but until then the originals are the only versions. The 2008 Wahlberg film adapts the first game loosely and can be skipped without losing anything.
