About Need for Speed
Need for Speed began in 1994 with exotic point to point races, then split into police chases with Hot Pursuit, tuner street racing with Underground, and open world pursuits with Most Wanted in 2005 and Carbon in 2006. Later years cycled through sim leaning Shift, rebooted runs in 2015 and 2017, Heat in 2019 and cel shaded Unbound in 2022.
Entries stand alone with no story order to follow, though Most Wanted and Carbon link directly. New players often start with Underground 2, Most Wanted 2005, Hot Pursuit 2010 or Heat depending on taste for tuners, cops or open night cities. Criterion remains attached to the next entry with no date set.
Good to know
Release order shows the handling and cop logic evolve, but few need the 1990s entries first. Underground 2 defines tuner culture, Most Wanted 2005 defines blacklist pursuits, and Hot Pursuit 2010 defines Autolog rivalry. Skip handheld and mobile spin-offs on a first pass since they repeat console ideas. Treat Unbound as the current endpoint while the next Criterion game stays undated.
