About Ninja Gaiden
Ninja Gaiden began with Tecmo's NES trilogy from 1988 about Ryu Hayabusa avenging his father against Jaquio. Team Ninja rebooted in 3D with Ninja Gaiden (2004), Dragon Sword (2008) and 3 (2012) around the Vigoor resurrection. The Master Collection (2021) bundled the modern run, Ragebound (2025) returned to 2D with Kenji Mozu, and Ninja Gaiden 4 released October 21, 2025 from PlatinumGames.
Koei Tecmo positions the fourth game as the start of a bigger run with Yakumo joining Ryu, keeping the series active rather than closed. The NES cutscenes pioneered story in action games, while the Xbox run defined hard-but-fair combat.
Good to know
Play the Master Collection trilogy first for the modern core, then Ninja Gaiden 4, since the Vigoor Sabre and clan lore assume the Xbox run. The NES trilogy works as history after with its own Jaquio plot. Ragebound fits anywhere as its 2D side story with no required placement for the 3D saga's events.
