About Outlast
Outlast began with Red Barrels in 2013 about journalist Miles Upshur filming Mount Massive asylum under Murkoff. Whistleblower (2014) retells the breakout from Waylon Park's view. Outlast 2 (2017) moves to the Arizona cult around Blake and Lynn with the Walrider thread behind it. The Outlast Trials (2024) runs Cold War co-op experiments as a Murkoff prequel.
Red Barrels keeps the Trials live with new missions and no story sequel dated as of 2026. The camcorder battery language runs through every entry, with the Trials adding shared hiding for the first time.
Good to know
Play Outlast with Whistleblower inside, then Outlast 2, then the Trials, since the Murkoff experiments assume the asylum history. The sequel's cult story stands apart from Miles, so expect new characters rather than returning faces. The Trials fits first on the timeline but plays best after the scares teach the hiding rules.
