About Red Dead

Red Dead Revolver from 2004 is a standalone bounty story from the 1880s with no plot link to later games. Red Dead Redemption from 2010 follows John Marston in 1911 with an epilogue in 1914, and Undead Nightmare from October 2010 replays that map as a non-canon zombie campaign. Red Dead Redemption 2 from October 2018 is a prequel set in 1899 with a 1907 epilogue.

Red Dead Online launched in beta in November 2018 and full in May 2019, set in 1898 with trader, bounty and collector roles. No story DLC followed Redemption 2, and Online has sat in maintenance since 2021. No third Redemption had an announcement as of September 2026, with Rockstar focused on GTA VI dated November 2026.

Good to know

Play in release order first: Revolver optional, then Redemption, then Undead Nightmare, then Redemption 2. That keeps the 2010 twists intact. Play Redemption 2 before Redemption on a story run if you want dates to move forward, since 2 is a prequel despite its number. Treat Undead Nightmare as an alternate timeline extra and Online as multiplayer only, since neither changes the Marston close.
