About Resident Evil

Release order runs from the Spencer Mansion in 1996 through Raccoon City and across Europe and Africa, as the series leans into action. Story order only differs at the front: Resident Evil Zero is a prequel to the first game, and Code: Veronica follows a few months after the Raccoon City incident.

Four early entries have been remade, and each remake is the version to play: Resident Evil (2002, reissued in HD in 2015), Resident Evil 2 (2019), Resident Evil 3 (2020) and Resident Evil 4 (2023). Code: Veronica is next, with Resident Evil Veronica dated for 2027.

Resident Evil 7 and Village move to first person with Ethan Winters, and Requiem picks up afterwards with Grace Ashcroft and Leon Kennedy.

Good to know

Revelations and Revelations 2 are canon but optional, and both slot between the numbered games in timeline order. Resident Evil 3 opens a couple of days before Resident Evil 2, so the pair works in either order. The multiplayer spin-offs (Operation Raccoon City, Resistance, Re:Verse) are skippable, and a Requiem expansion and photo mode are confirmed without dates. Resident Evil Veronica arrives in 2027.
