About Sakura Wars

Sakura Wars is Sega's genre collision: tactical battles in steam-powered armor by day, dating-sim theater management with an all-female revue by night, set across Taisho-era Tokyo, Paris and New York. The Saturn originals (1996, 1998) built the formula, and entries 3 and 4 moved the theater to Paris.

Play in release order, since each game carries forward the captain's relationships. Sakura Wars V (2005) shifts to New York with a new lead, and the 2019 reboot returns to Tokyo with another fresh cast. The TV anime and films retell or sidestory the games, so they are bonuses after, not before. Trust levels shape battle performance, which is the whole strategic point.

Good to know

Sakura Wars V released in the West as So Long, My Love on PS2 and Wii, a decade after its Japanese debut, so expect a localization of its era. The 2019 game is a soft reboot: old characters cameo, but no prior game is required. The 2000 TV series adapts the first game loosely, while the 2001 film continues it. Stage shows and the 2020 anime are extras for fans. No new game has been announced since 2019.
