About Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor follows Talion, a Gondorian ranger bound to the wraith Celebrimbor, hunting Sauron's captains across Mordor and Nurn. Monolith Productions built it for PS4, Xbox One and PC, and released it on September 30, 2014. Its hook is the Nemesis system, where orc captains remember past fights, gain scars and ranks, and return with grudges.
Middle-earth: Shadow of War continues that story on October 10, 2017 with larger regions, fortress sieges and an expanded Nemesis system that adds followers, betrayals and online vendettas. Play Mordor first for the tighter introduction, then War for the payoff. This is a closed two game arc from a studio that shut down in February 2025.
Good to know
Release order is the play order here. The story runs straight from Mordor into War, so there is no separate chronological list worth making. Treat the Lord of the Hunt and Bright Lord DLC for the first game plus the Blade of Galadriel and Desolation of Mordor expansions for the second as extras after each main story. This franchise duology sits inside the wider Monolith Productions catalogue, which has its own studio guide.
