About Shenmue
Shenmue follows Ryo Hazuki's revenge across three games that cover roughly forty percent of the planned story. The 1999 original opens in Yokosuka with Lan Di's murder of Iwao, Shenmue II in 2001 continues through Hong Kong toward Guilin, and Shenmue III in 2019 picks up in rural China on Kickstarter funding. The Animation from 2022 adapts the first two games as an alternate telling.
Release order is story order with the anime as a companion extra. HD ports of the first two modernize access on current platforms. Shenmue 4 has no date despite Suzuki's hopes and an in-game letter asking for it, so the third game stays the endpoint at forty percent told.
Good to know
Play all three in release order without skipping the second. Shenmue II ends on the Guilin cliffhanger that the third game resumes directly after eighteen years. The anime compresses the first two games and works after them as a refresher, not a substitute. Shenmue 4 remains hopes and letters rather than a project, so expect no closure beyond game three.
