About Spelunky

Spelunky is Derek Yu's cave roguelike where every run reshuffles traps, shops and ghosts. Spelunky from 2008 as freeware, remade in HD in 2012, sets the whip, ropes and Kali rules with spelunker Guy. Spelunky 2 from September 2020 moves to the moon with daughter Ana, mounts and layered levels.

Mossmouth built both with the same die and retry loop. Mechanics, not plot, carry over, so whip timing and shop ethics matter more than lore. Daily runs and shortcuts only click after part one basics. Death teaches.

Good to know

There is no story timeline to reorder, since both games reset the caves each run. Release order is still the best tutorial. Play the HD original first for whip and ghost basics, then part two for mounts and pools. Newcomers short on time can start with part two, but expect harder layers. Bring ropes.
