About StarTropics
StarTropics launched December 1990 on NES in the US from Nintendo R and D 3, with Mike Jones wielding an island yo-yo across isles for his uncle. Zoda Revenge followed March 1994 as a US only NES sequel about time travel from Stone Age to Wild West with Leonardo and Cleopatra beats. The sequel runs on a tweaked engine with eight way movement and mid jump turns.
Both runs stayed Nintendo exclusive with Wii, Wii U and Switch Online ports. Zoda Revenge stands as a late NES first party close, second to last before Wario Woods, with heart containers carrying over from Zelda style design.
Good to know
Play StarTropics first for yo-yo range and dungeon map logic, since Zoda Revenge assumes island basics known. The sequel final cave recreates the first game opening until the snake boss, then branches new, so the callback lands only in order. The 1994 run never released in Japan, keeping English as the reference text.
