About Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage starts in 1991 with Axel, Blaze and Adam cleaning Wood Oak City. Streets of Rage 2 from 1992 adds Skate and Max and is widely seen as the peak of the Genesis run. Streets of Rage 3 from 1994 closes the Mr. X arc with robot and bomb plots.
Streets of Rage 4 from 2020 returns years later with the Y twins as the new foes and Axel and Blaze as mentors. The Mr. X Nightmare DLC from 2021 adds survival and new fighters. A film adaptation has been discussed but no game sequel had been dated as of September 2026.
Good to know
Play 1 through 4 in order for the short Mr. X story. Streets of Rage 2 can be the start on a short run since it replays the setup fast. Streets of Rage 3 looks divisive on music and difficulty, so normal mode suits a first pass. Play 4 last even though its art shifts, since its story assumes the original trio won before.
