About Super Mario

Super Mario platformers split into two lines: the 2D side-scrollers from 1985's Super Mario Bros. through Wonder, and the 3D adventures from Mario 64 through Odyssey. Almost every game is a standalone rescue of Princess Peach, so there is no story to spoil and no wrong starting point.

Kart, Party, sports and RPGs are their own worlds with their own orders. This guide covers the main platformers only.

Good to know

Nintendo has never published an official Mario timeline, so release order is the play order. Newcomers can also just start with a modern entry: Odyssey for 3D or Wonder for 2D.

The latest release is the 2026 Switch 2 edition of Wonder with the new Bellabel Park area. No new 3D Mario has been announced, the longest gap since Odyssey in 2017.
