About Unreal
Unreal began with Epic's 1998 shooter about prisoner 849 escaping Na Pali against the Skaarj, expanded by Return to Na Pali the next year. Unreal Tournament (1999) spun the weapons into arena combat, Tournament 2003 and 2004 refined vehicles and Onslaught, and Championship 2 (2005) plus Tournament 3 (2007) closed the run. The cancelled 2014 reboot never left pre-alpha.
Epic moved on to Gears and Fortnite after 2007 with no new Unreal dated as of 2026. The Tournament games share guns and maps with the story entries but no plot, so the campaign and the arenas split cleanly.
Good to know
Play Unreal and its expansion first for the Na Pali story, then the Tournament games as multiplayer extras in any order. Tournament 2004 works as the arena peak with its vehicle modes intact through community servers. The 2014 reboot attempt sits abandoned and free, a curiosity rather than a chapter.
