About The Witcher
CD Projekt Red's Witcher games continue Geralt of Rivia's story after the books, across a trilogy released from 2007 to 2015. The third game received two large expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, while the 2018 Thronebreaker tells a separate wartime story with card-based battles. Release order matches story order, so the list below is chronological as well.
New players should start with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which recaps what matters from the first two games in its journal and dialogue. Owners of the older games can play all three in order, then the expansions, then Thronebreaker at any point.
Good to know
The Netflix series and its spinoffs have a separate post (the-witcher-watch-order) and share no continuity requirements with the games. Announced but unreleased as of Sept 2026: a Witcher 3 remaster on Sept 29, 2026; Songs of the Past, a third expansion starring Geralt, dated 2027; The Witcher 4, a Ciri-led Unreal Engine 5 saga opener targeting 2028; and a full remake of the 2007 original (Canis Majoris) by Fool's Theory with no date. A multiplayer spinoff codenamed Sirius was rebooted in 2023 and has shown nothing since, so it stays out until CD Projekt shows it again.
