About Monster Hunter
Monster Hunter has players track and carve large monsters across hub quests since 2004 on PlayStation 2. Early Portable entries built the loop on handhelds, Tri added underwater hunts, 4 added mounts, and Generations collected styles as a celebration. World in 2018 moved to open zones with no loading between areas plus Iceborne in 2019.
Rise in 2021 added Wirebugs and Palamutes plus Sunbreak in 2022, while Wilds in 2025 runs on current consoles with dynamic herds. Most entries stand alone with no story order to follow. New players usually start with World, Rise or Wilds depending on platform rather than history.
Good to know
Release order is the only order that shows the mechanics grow, but few players need the PS2 or PSP originals first. World remains the best modern start for co-op, Rise plays faster on Switch and PC, and Wilds is the current showcase. Older Portable games still work but expect slower gathering and smaller zones. Expansions Iceborne and Sunbreak belong right after their base games, not as separate starts.
