About Alexander Payne
Alexander Payne directed Citizen Ruth in 1996 and Election in 1999, then About Schmidt in 2002, Sideways in 2004, The Descendants in 2011 and Nebraska in 2013.
Downsizing arrived in 2017 and The Holdovers in 2023. Watch in release order. The road trip structure repeats with new cargo each time, and the Omaha humanity never wavers. Dern, Nicholson and Giamatti anchor the middle runs with Duvall opening the road. The wine country detour in Sideways reset the tone. The Descendants Hawaii trip centers the middle.
Good to know
Each film stands alone, so no chronological order exists. Election, Sideways, The Descendants, Nebraska and The Holdovers make the clearest core. The Holdovers from 2023 is the latest feature as of October 2026. Start with Election for the satire at its sharpest. The road movie frame never leaves. Start with Election.
