About Bertrand Blier
Bertrand Blier broke through with Going Places in 1974, starring Gerard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere as restless drifters. Get Out Your Handkerchiefs followed in 1978 and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Buffet froid arrived in 1979 as a cold surreal crime comedy, then Beau Pere in 1981 as a thorny family romance.
My Best Friend's Girl followed in 1983, Our Story in 1984, and Evening Dress in 1986, each mixing farce with bruised male pride. Too Beautiful for You closed this selection in 1989 with a subtler marriage triangle and wide popular success. Watch these eight in release order, since jokes and partnerships carry forward.
Good to know
These films do not share characters or a timeline, so there is no chronological order to untangle. Release order matters because Blier kept the same rough company of actors and rewrote similar masculine rivalries with more control each time. Later titles such as Merci la vie from 1991 sit outside this key eight. Blier died on January 20, 2025, so this guide is closed.
