About Jason Bourne
Five films released between 2002 and 2016 center on CIA assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), an amnesiac piecing together Treadstone while the agency hunts him. Doug Liman launched the series and Paul Greengrass directed three entries, defining its handheld style. The Bourne Legacy (2012) hands the lead to Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), a chemically enhanced Outcome operative on the run after Bourne exposes the programs.
Release order is story order. Legacy runs parallel to the fallout of Ultimatum, so watch it fourth. The Treadstone TV series (2019) lasted one season on USA Network and ties loosely to the films. A sixth film has been in development with director Edward Berger linked since 2023, and NBCUniversal secured the book rights in August 2025, but no shoot or date exists.
Good to know
Berger said in October 2024 it was unclear whether he would direct. Damon said in 2026 that he and Berger were talking but still working on the story. The Bourne Dilemma surfaced as a working title in Production Weekly. Treat the sixth film as tentative.
