About Bruno Dumont

Bruno Dumont films the north of France with non actors and long takes. The Life of Jesus from 1997 follows epileptic Freddy through bikes and racism, Humanity from 1999 trails a policeman after a schoolgirl murder. Both won at Cannes. Twentynine Palms from 2003 strands a couple in the desert, Flanders from 2006 sends farm boys to war and won a second Grand Prix.

Hadewijch from 2009 tracks a novice toward extremes, Hors Satan from 2011 and Camille Claudel 1915 from 2013 with Juliette Binoche stay spare. Li'l Quinquin from 2014 and Slack Bay from 2016 turn to deadpan comedy, Jeannette from 2017 and Joan of Arc from 2019 musicalize Joan, France from 2021 satirizes TV news, The Empire from 2024 parodies space opera.

Good to know

Watch in release order, there is no shared story. Humanity and Flanders both won the Cannes Grand Prix, which explains his festival weight. Li'l Quinquin started as TV and plays as four comedy hours, so split it across nights. The Empire is a straight parody of sci-fi sagas and works even without the earlier run. Start with Humanity for the core, then Slack Bay for the comic turn.
