About Carol Reed
Carol Reed hit his stride right after the war with Odd Man Out in 1947, The Fallen Idol in 1948 and The Third Man in 1949, the last two written with Graham Greene. The Third Man, with its Vienna sewers and zither score, was voted the greatest British film of the century by the British Film Institute. Outcast of the Islands in 1951 and The Man Between in 1953 kept him in morally foggy territory.
Our Man in Havana in 1959 reunited him with Greene for Cold War comedy, while The Agony and the Ecstasy in 1965 staged Michelangelo against the Pope. Oliver! in 1968 won best picture and earned Reed the directing Oscar. These eight skip his early quickies and late minor works, focusing on the films that define his name. Release order matches chronology, since the stories never connect.
Good to know
Reed died in 1976, so this order is finished and will not change. The eight here are a selection from over thirty directing credits, chosen because they are the most watched and most discussed. Purists can add Trapeze from 1956 or The Key from 1958 between The Man Between and Our Man in Havana. The Third Man rewards a big screen if you can find one, for the canted angles alone.
