About Frankenstein
Frankenstein restarts with every telling since the creature is public domain. Whale's 1931 film builds the monster and Bride of Frankenstein from 1935 continues directly as the only true sequel.
Young Frankenstein from 1974 parodies both, Branagh's 1994 version plays Shelley straight, and Victor Frankenstein from 2015 retells from Igor's view. Del Toro's 2025 Netflix film adapts faithfully, and The Bride from March 2026 reimagines the bride story. Tour the essentials in release order as separate tellings.
Good to know
Only the 1931 and 1935 films connect; everything else reboots the myth independently. The Reborn Cut of del Toro's film arrives on Criterion in October 2026 as an extended home-video version rather than a new story. No new narrative film is dated beyond The Bride. Start with 1931 and Bride for the Universal core, or jump to 2025 for the modern peak.
