About Dario Argento
Dario Argento defined Italian giallo with his Animal Trilogy in the early seventies, then broke through internationally with Deep Red in 1975. Suspiria followed in 1977 as the first part of the Three Mothers story, continued with Inferno in 1980. Tenebrae in 1982 returned him to straight giallo, while Phenomena in 1985 and Opera in 1987 mixed crime plots with supernatural horror and elaborate set pieces.
The later picks show his return phases. Sleepless in 2001 revisits classic giallo structure, Mother of Tears in 2007 closes the Three Mothers trilogy, and Dark Glasses in 2022 is his most recent feature, a Rome set thriller about a blind escort hunted by a killer. The films are standalone, so release order is the sensible watch order.
Good to know
Four Flies on Grey Velvet premiered in Italy in December 1971, though some US sources list 1972, so expect both years. Tenebrae is often spelled Tenebre after the Italian title. Phenomena was cut sharply in the US as Creepers. Skipped here are The Stendhal Syndrome, Trauma, The Phantom of the Opera, The Card Player, Giallo and Dracula 3D, which matter to completists but crowd a starter list. No new feature has released since Dark Glasses, though a Huppert project has been reported.
