About The Shining
Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980) stars Jack Nicholson as winter caretaker Jack Torrance at the Overlook Hotel. Kubrick trimmed it twice after the premiere: the US version runs 144 minutes and the European version 119, with whole scenes removed. Stephen King disliked the changes, so he wrote and produced a three-part TV miniseries in 1997, directed by Mick Garris and shot at the Stanley Hotel, the building that inspired his novel.
Doctor Sleep (2019), written and directed by Mike Flanagan from King's 2013 novel, follows the adult Dan Torrance, played by Ewan McGregor, as he protects a gifted girl from Rose the Hat and her cult. It borrows imagery from Kubrick's film while keeping King's book ending. Watch in release order: Kubrick first, the miniseries as an alternate telling, then Doctor Sleep.
Good to know
The European cut drops the doctor and garage scenes with Anne Jackson and Tony Burton, among other trims. The 1997 miniseries retells the same novel rather than continuing Kubrick's film. No further Shining screen project was dated as of September 17, 2026.
