About Deep Blue Sea
Deep Blue Sea from 1999 follows a research crew at the Aquatica ocean facility whose smarter mako sharks turn the station into a trap. The film mixes lab thriller setup with a disaster movie second half, and it holds up as the only theatrical entry in the series.
The sequels arrived almost twenty years later as low budget follow ups about bull sharks. Deep Blue Sea 2 from 2018 retreads the first film with a new cast, while Deep Blue Sea 3 from 2020 moves the action to a small island station studying climate effects on great whites.
Good to know
Watch in release order. The second film repeats the premise with new characters, so it plays best as a standalone encore rather than a continuation to study closely. The third film connects loosely to the second through the enhanced shark program. A fourth film has been discussed by cast since 2023, but no studio date exists, so the trilogy stands complete for now.
