About Die Hard
John McClane ages in something close to real time across Die Hard (1988), Die Hard 2 (1990), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), Live Free or Die Hard (2007) and A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), so release order and story order match. The first two are set at Christmas, the third is a summer thriller across Manhattan, and the last two drop the holiday setting.
Bruce Willis left acting after his 2022 diagnosis, and the long-planned sixth film, a prequel and sequel hybrid called McClane, died when Disney absorbed Fox. 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell was asked about new plans in October 2024 and answered: "No, not yet."
Good to know
Nothing is announced as of September 2026. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said the McClane project was not happening back in July 2021, and no new writer or director has been announced since. The films come from Roderick Thorp's novel Nothing Lasts Forever, which is why Frank Sinatra held first refusal on the role.
