About Don Sharp

Australian director Don Sharp became one of the most reliable hands in British genre cinema after Hammer hired him for Kiss of the Vampire in 1963. That film led to the pirate adventure The Devil-Ship Pirates, the Lon Chaney witchcraft tale Witchcraft, and the science fiction sequel Curse of the Fly. He then directed Christopher Lee twice as Sax Rohmer's villain in The Face of Fu Manchu and Rasputin the Mad Monk.

Only some of these six were made at Hammer proper, but they share crews, pacing and tone with the studio's output. Release order is the right viewing order, since the films are standalone stories. Seen together they show Sharp moving from gothic horror to adventure and thriller material without losing his direct, economical style.

Good to know

Do not expect a shared universe here. Kiss of the Vampire was planned near the Dracula series but stands alone, Curse of the Fly continues a Fox series, and the Fu Manchu films belong to the Harry Alan Towers cycle. Later Sharp work such as Psychomania, Callan and The Thirty Nine Steps is outside this list. Watch the six below in order and treat each as a self contained genre piece.
