About Escape Room
Escape Room (2019) traps six winners in oven, ice and upside bar rooms run by Minos, opening January 4, 2019 from Adam Robitel for Sony. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2021) pulls survivors Zoey and Ben back with four new champs, opening July 16, 2021 in the US with an extended cut on VOD October 5, 2021 that swaps the ending.
The second starts minutes after the first plane tease and assumes you know the Wootan Yu lab and the Minos logo. Robitel has pitched a third film since 2021, but Sony has not ordered it. Watch theatrical then extended if you want both, since the alternate ending changes who runs Minos.
Good to know
Release order is story order, with the sequel opening on the first film's hijack. Do not skip the first, since the sequel names every prior trap without showing them. The extended cut runs a few minutes longer with a different villain reveal, so pick one cut per watch. Treat the duology as on hold, with the plane cliffhanger still dangling and no third dated.
