About Francis Lee
Francis Lee debuted with Gods Own Country in 2017 about a Yorkshire farmer and a Romanian worker. The film won Sundance world cinema directing with mud and lambing. Ammonite followed in 2020 pairing Winslet and Ronan as fossil hunter and wife on the Dorset coast.
Both films work through looks before words and end without neat bows. The plots never link, but the method rhymes in weather and labor. Release order shows his Yorkshire eye widening to the sea with the same patience intact throughout. His actor past shows in the hands and labor close ups throughout both films.
Good to know
Watch Gods Own Country before Ammonite since the touch grammar carries over well. The farm film suits a raw night while the fossil one wants calm focus. Both reward patience over plot hunger. No next feature has a date yet, so the 2020 beach film stays last until one is announced. His Sundance prizes confirm the debut, so give the farm full attention.
