About Gillian Armstrong
My Brilliant Career from 1979 made Armstrong the first Australian woman in decades to direct a feature, with Davis refusing marriage for writing. Starstruck from 1982 follows a barmaid chasing a singing contest, and Mrs. Soffel from 1984 puts Keaton and Gibson in a prison romance. High Tide from 1987 reunites Davis as a singer meeting the daughter she left.
Little Women from 1994 became her biggest hit, with Ryder and Sarandon as the March sisters. Oscar and Lucinda from 1997 pairs Fiennes and Blanchett over a glass church gamble, and Charlotte Gray from 2001 sends Blanchett into wartime France. Death Defying Acts from 2007 closes this run with Houdini chasing the afterlife.
Good to know
The films share themes but no story, so release order shows the career arc best. Start with My Brilliant Career for the breakthrough, then Little Women for the crowd pleaser. Oscar and Lucinda and Charlotte Gray play as a Blanchett pair. Death Defying Acts is the current endpoint, with later work mostly documentary.
