About Godzilla
Toho's Godzilla spans four Japanese eras plus the American Monsterverse, and the eras reboot instead of continuing. The Showa run lasted from the 1954 original through Terror of Mechagodzilla in 1975, the Heisei run from 1984 to 1995 kept one continuity, and the Millennium films from 1999 to 2004 reset with almost every entry.
The Reiwa era brought Shin Godzilla in 2016, an anime trilogy, Singular Point, and the Oscar-winning Minus One in 2023. Its direct sequel Minus Zero premiered at NYFF on September 26, 2026 and opens in Japan on November 3, 2026 with North America on November 6. The Legendary Monsterverse runs as a separate continuity alongside all of this.
Good to know
New viewers should start with the 1954 original, then Minus One, then Shin Godzilla, since those three show what the character can be without demanding thirty films of homework. Era order matches release order within each continuity, so Showa, Heisei and Millennium each play straight through. Keep the Monsterverse apart from Toho, since Legendary's Godzilla lives in a different timeline with its own Monarch mythology.
