About Hellboy
Hellboy splits into three runs. Guillermo del Toro directed Hellboy (2004) and The Golden Army (2008) with Ron Perlman as Red, building the BPRD family around Liz, Abe and Johann. The 2019 reboot from Neil Marshall cast David Harbour with Milla Jovovich as Nimue. The Crooked Man (2024) from Brian Taylor cast Jack Kesy in a low-budget folk-horror take on Mignola's Appalachian story.
No sequel to any run has been dated, with the del Toro third film long cancelled and the reboot eras stalling at one entry each. Creator Mike Mignola co-wrote the 2024 film, which follows its comic most closely despite the small budget.
Good to know
Start with the del Toro duology, since its two films form the only complete arc among the versions. The 2019 film and The Crooked Man each reboot from the origin, so neither needs the others first. Animated films Sword of Storms and Blood and Iron from 2006 sit with the Perlman voice cast as bonus cases after the first film.
