About Ip Man
Ip Man follows the Wing Chun master from Foshan in the thirties through Hong Kong and finally San Francisco, played by Donnie Yen across four films directed by Wilson Yip. The spinoff Master Z follows Cheung Tin Chi after his duel in part three, so it slots between the third and fourth films in story terms.
Start with Ip Man 1 through 3 in release order, then watch Master Z, then close with Ip Man 4. Release order also works, since Master Z came out between parts three and four, but story order makes Cheung's exit clearer. A fifth film was announced at Cannes in 2023 with no release date.
Good to know
The four Donnie Yen films plus Master Z form one connected run, while other Ip Man titled films from other studios sit outside it. Master Z is the only placement worth thinking about, and putting it before part four keeps both endings intact. Ip Man 5 has been announced but not dated, so this list stops at part four for now.
