About J. Lee Thompson
J. Lee Thompson, who died in 2002, earned his name with the desert trek of Ice Cold in Alex from 1958 and the child witness drama Tiger Bay from 1959. The Guns of Navarone from 1961 won him an Oscar nomination, and the original Cape Fear from 1962 with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum remains his most quoted thriller.
Kings of the Sun from 1963 and Mackenna's Gold from 1969 show his taste for large outdoor adventure, then Conquest of the Planet of the Apes from 1972 turns to science fiction. Death Wish 4 from 1987 closes the list in Cannon era crime mode. Release order is the clean watch, since nothing here shares continuity.
Good to know
Thompson directed more than fifty features, so this guide picks the best known theatrical stops and skips television and late Cannon filler. Note the title styling: the director billed himself J. Lee Thompson, and the slug drops the periods for file naming. Years follow original release, including the 1961 Navarone premiere and the 1962 Cape Fear opening.
