About Michael Winner
Michael Winner, who died in 2013, worked fast and favored hard genre setups, starting here with the wartime escape story Hannibal Brooks from 1969. Lawman from 1971 and Chato's Land from 1972 are lean westerns, and The Mechanic from 1972 with Charles Bronson locks in the hitman template Winner kept returning to.
Scorpio from 1973 pairs Burt Lancaster with Alain Delon for a globe hopping spy plot, then Death Wish from 1974 turns Bronson into a New York vigilante. The Sentinel from 1977 is a horror detour, and Death Wish II from 1982 hardens the formula. Release order shows the style getting tougher each time.
Good to know
Winner directed more than thirty features, so this is a highlights path centered on the Bronson crime run and the westerns around it. Death Wish is a difficult watch by design, and its politics have been argued over since 1974. The films stand alone, so there is no plot continuity to manage beyond watching the two Death Wish entries in sequence.
