About Speed
Speed from 1994 traps Keanu Reeves's Jack Traven aboard a bus rigged to explode below 50 mph by Dennis Hopper's Payne. Directed by Jan de Bont, it earned 350 million and made Reeves and Sandra Bullock stars.
Speed 2: Cruise Control followed in 1997 with Bullock alone on a hijacked cruise ship, and flopped hard without Reeves. The two films share only Bullock and the speed gimmick. Watch the original first for one of the decade's best action films, then the sequel only as a curiosity. Reeves's absence from the sequel explains most of the quality gap.
Good to know
Release order is the only order, and honesty demands the caveat: the sequel is widely considered one of the worst follow-ups ever made. Reeves declined it for good reason, and the ship setting drains the original's tension. New viewers wanting just the classic can stop after 1994 with zero loss. Nothing further has been announced.
