About Jailer
Jailer is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language action comedy written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran through Sun Pictures, with Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian, a former jailer who goes back to work for the man he put away, and with Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik in the cast. It opened on August 10, 2023.
Sun Pictures announced the sequel in January 2025, and principal photography started that March in Chennai and ran through Kerala, Coimbatore, Mysore and Goa until it wrapped in April 2026. Anirudh Ravichander composed the score, Vijay Kartik Kannan shot it and R. Nirmal edited it.
Jailer 2 opened worldwide on October 15, 2026 in standard and IMAX formats with S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vidya Balan joining the returning cast. It received generally positive reviews and became the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026.
Good to know
Two films, one order. The sequel continues the Muthuvel Pandian story directly, so release order and story order are the same list and there is nothing to rearrange.
Jailer 2 is a sequel rather than a reboot, so the first film is not optional background. It picks up with the same cast and the same character, and Rajinikanth's role as a former jailer working for his former prisoner is the setup the sequel builds on.
The IMAX release is worth seeking out, since Tamil action films are shot for the format.
