About John Cassavetes
John Cassavetes paid for his own films with acting jobs and shot around friendships. Shadows from 1959 follows Beat era youth in New York with improvised talk. Too Late Blues from 1961 and A Child Is Waiting from 1963 were studio jobs he later disowned. Faces from 1968, Husbands from 1970 and Minnie and Moskowitz from 1971 return to close rooms and raw marital fights.
A Woman Under the Influence from 1974 stars Gena Rowlands as Mabel, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie from 1976 follows a strip club owner in debt, Opening Night from 1977 tracks a stage actor coming apart. Gloria from 1980, Love Streams from 1984 and Big Trouble from 1986 close the run.
Good to know
Watch in release order, there is no shared story. Faces earned three Oscar nominations and A Woman Under the Influence earned two, which helps explain his pull. The studio titles play cooler than the self funded ones, so do not judge the run by them. Gloria won the Golden Lion and Love Streams won the Golden Bear. Start with A Woman Under the Influence if twelve films feels like a lot, then go back to Shadows.
