Costa debuted with Blood in 1989, then Casa de Lava in 1994 shot in Cape Verde and Bones in 1997 in Lisbon blocks, the latter in Venice competition. In Vanda's Room arrived in 2000, shot on MiniDV across two years in one Fontainhas room with non actors.
Colossal Youth followed in 2006 in Cannes competition, Horse Money in 2014 with Ventura, winning Best Director at Locarno, and Vitalina Varela in 2019, winning the Golden Leopard and Best Actress at Locarno.
