About John Gilling

John Gilling wrote for Hammer through the 1950s before directing The Flesh and the Fiends in 1960, a Burke and Hare story starring Peter Cushing. He followed it with the cat revenge tale The Shadow of the Cat and the pirate adventure The Pirates of Blood River. His reputation rests on the 1966 Cornwall pair, The Plague of the Zombies and The Reptile, shot back to back on shared sets, plus The Mummy's Shroud in 1967.

All six are standalone stories, so release order works best and shows his staging grow more confident. The Cornwall pair makes a strong double feature, with village suspicion, mine owners and local ritual driving both plots. Start at the top and move forward, saving the two 1966 films for consecutive nights.

Good to know

The common mix up is release sequence for the 1966 pair. The Plague of the Zombies reached cinemas first, paired with Dracula Prince of Darkness, with The Reptile following on the Rasputin bill. Gilling also wrote The Gorgon and directed non horror titles like The Night Caller, which are left out here to keep this a horror focused list. No chronological order is needed since the stories do not connect.
