About John Hough

John Hough started in British television on The Avengers before his Hammer vampire film Twins of Evil in 1971. The Legend of Hell House followed in 1973, a bleak haunted house investigation that stays his most quoted horror title. Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry in 1974 switched gears to a long car chase crime picture with Peter Fonda.

Disney then hired him for Escape to Witch Mountain in 1975 and Return from Witch Mountain in 1978, both built around two children with strange powers. The Watcher in the Woods in 1980 blends Disney family framing with real supernatural dread, and American Gothic in 1988 closes the set as a harsher late horror film. Watch in release order, since none of the stories connect and the order shows his horror and family strands crossing.

Good to know

Each film is a separate story, so there is no chronological order and release order is the viewing order. The Watcher in the Woods had a troubled rollout with a reworked ending after its 1980 premiere, but it is listed here as a 1980 film. This starter set skips Brass Target and the Howling sequel. Hough was born in 1941 and is retired with his last credit in 2001, but as a living director the guide stays marked ongoing.
