About Lethal Weapon
Lethal Weapon pairs LAPD detective Roger Murtaugh, days from retirement, with Martin Riggs, a former Special Forces operative falling apart after his wife's death. All four films were directed by Richard Donner, released between 1987 and 1998, and follow the two partners as their families intertwine across cases involving heroin smugglers, South African diplomats, a corrupt ex-cop and a Chinese triad.
Fox aired a TV reboot from 2016 to 2019 with Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans as Riggs and Murtaugh. It retells the partnership from scratch in a separate continuity, so it is optional after the films rather than part of the main sequence.
Good to know
A fifth film has been discussed since 2007. Mel Gibson confirmed in August 2026 that he and writer Richard Wenk finished a script honoring Donner, who died in 2021, but Warner Bros. has not started production. Until cameras roll, the four Donner films are the complete story. The TV series recasts everyone and resets the timeline, so skipping it costs nothing if you only want the original Riggs and Murtaugh arc.
