Luc Besson Watch Order

Ten key Luc Besson features in release order, from Subway in 1985 and The Big Blue in 1988 through Nikita, Leon and The Fifth Element to Lucy in 2014 and Dracula in 2025. The films share no continuity, so release order best shows his path from stylish French thrillers to large scale genre cinema.

About Luc Besson

Luc Besson, born March 18, 1959, broke out with the Paris metro drama Subway in 1985, then found a wider audience with The Big Blue in 1988 and La Femme Nikita in 1990. Leon: The Professional followed in 1994 and The Fifth Element in 1997, the two films that made him known to viewers around the world. The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc arrived in 1999.

After a run focused on writing and producing, he returned as director with Lucy in 2014, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets in 2017, Dogman in 2023, and Dracula in 2025. Watch the ten in release order, since each stands alone and the fun is seeing his visual style grow from small crime stories to effects driven worlds.

Good to know

These films tell separate stories with no shared continuity, so there is no separate chronological order to follow. Release order is the intended path, and it keeps the Nikita to Leon progression clear. Besson remains active, with Dracula released in France in July 2025 and June and John also dated 2025, so expect this list to grow. The Arthur films and The Lady are left out here to keep this a ten film starter path.
