About Mario Bava
Mario Bava directed more than 25 features after years as a cinematographer, and this ten film path keeps to horror and giallo. It opens with Black Sunday in 1960, then The Girl Who Knew Too Much in 1963, Black Sabbath in 1963 and Blood and Black Lace in 1964, the run that set giallo rules for color, camera movement and masked killers.
Planet of the Vampires arrived in 1965, Kill, Baby, Kill in 1966, Danger: Diabolik in 1968, A Bay of Blood in 1971, Baron Blood in 1972 and Lisa and the Devil in 1974. The stories do not connect, so release order works and shows practical effects and lighting ideas building from gothic black and white to bright, bloody set pieces.
Good to know
Every entry here stands alone, so there is no chronological order apart from release order. Bava died in 1980, and later titles such as Shock from 1977 fall outside this horror starter set. A Bay of Blood is unusually gory for its date and shaped later slasher films. Start with Black Sunday, then Black Sabbath and Blood and Black Lace, since those three explain why later directors copied his lighting and camera tricks.
