About Mission: Impossible

Eight films, one star: Tom Cruise has played IMF agent Ethan Hunt in every entry since 1996, while the director's chair rotated through De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, Brad Bird and finally Christopher McQuarrie, who made four of them. The first three films are close to standalone, each with its own villain and its own rules.

From Ghost Protocol (2011) onward the series turns into a proper team show and the continuity starts to matter. Simon Pegg's Benji becomes a field agent, Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa arrives in Rogue Nation, and the last three films form one unbroken story: Fallout feeds straight into Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), which feeds into The Final Reckoning (2025). Release order is story order, so one list covers it.

Good to know

The Final Reckoning was marketed as the finale, and Cruise said in May 2025 that it was his last time as Ethan Hunt, though he has not ruled out more. No ninth film was announced as of September 2026, so treat this as a completed run for now. One rewatch tip: the Rabbit's Foot from Mission: Impossible III retroactively turns out to be where the Entity came from, so keep III in the marathon.
