About The NeverEnding Story
The NeverEnding Story films follow Bastian, a boy who reads a book about the land of Fantasia, and Atreyu, the young warrior inside that book fighting the Nothing. The 1984 original adapts the first half of Michael Ende's novel, the 1990 sequel adapts the second half, and the 1994 third film tells an original story.
Watch in release order. Quality drops steeply after the first film and the cast changes each time, but the story is linear, so there is no alternative order that helps. New multi-film adaptations from See-Saw Films were announced in 2024 and remain in development.
Good to know
Ende famously disliked the 1984 film for straying from his novel, which is worth knowing before you go in. The 1990 sequel hews closer to the book's second half, while the 1994 entry is original and widely regarded as skippable. The announced reboot has no cast, director or date, so it stays out of the list for now.
