About Ousmane Sembene
Ousmane Sembene turned from novels to film to reach past elites. Black Girl from 1966 follows a Dakar maid to France and stands as the first Sub-Saharan feature to travel. Mandabi from 1968 traps a man in money order bureaucracy. Xala from 1975 adapts his novel on a businessman curse, Ceddo from 1977 on faith revolt.
Camp de Thiaroye from 1988 reconstructs French troops killing returned soldiers. Guelwaar from 1992 splits a village over a burial, Faat Kine from 2000 follows a working mother, Moolaade from 2004 shelters girls from cutting and closes the run. Sembene died in 2007 after studying at Gorky under Donskoy.
Good to know
Watch in release order. Black Girl runs just over an hour and pairs with short Borom Sarret from 1963. Xala adapts his own 1973 novel, so book readers still gain from the film staging. Ceddo was long restricted in places, current prints run full. Moolaade won at Cannes and works as a gentle entry. Start with Black Girl for the root, then Xala.
