About Patricio Guzman
Patricio Guzman filmed Chile from Allende to aftermath. The Battle of Chile trilogy, Insurrection of the Bourgeoisie from 1975, Coup d'etat from 1976 and Popular Power from 1979, tracks workers against CIA backed destabilization. Film stock came from Chris Marker, reels left by boat via Sweden.
Nostalgia for the Light from 2010 pairs Atacama astronomers with women sifting disappeared remains. The Pearl Button from 2015 follows water from Fuegian genocide to sea burials under Pinochet. The Cordillera of Dreams from 2019 closes on the Andes. Guzman died in Paris in September 2026 aged 85 after five decades.
Good to know
Watch in release order. The Battle trilogy runs as one sweeping account, so keep the three parts together. Nostalgia, Pearl Button and Cordillera form a later landscape trilogy on desert, sea and mountains. The button found on a rail weight anchors Pearl Button. Start with Nostalgia for the Light for poetry, then the Battle trilogy.
