About Planet of the Apes
Ten films, three canons that never touch. The original series ran five movies between 1968 and 1973, starting with Charlton Heston crashing on a world where apes give the orders. Tim Burton's 2001 remake has its own cast and its own last shot. The reboot series beginning with Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) is a separate continuity that follows Caesar from lab ape to legend, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) jumps roughly three centuries past War.
Release order is the clean first watch: originals, remake, reboot. Story order puts the reboot first, since its timeline runs from the present day to centuries before the year 3978 where the 1968 film begins, then the originals, then the remake.
Good to know
The canons do not connect, so story order here ranks eras rather than following one plot. Inside the originals, release order already is story order. The 1974 CBS series and the 1975 cartoon are skippable extras, and the 2001 remake is standalone. A new untitled film from Matt Shakman and Josh Friedman was announced in May 2026 with no date, and it may have replaced the Kingdom sequel once dated for May 14, 2027.
