About Planet of the Apes

Ten Planet of the Apes films run from the 1968 original to Kingdom (2024). The original five follow Taylor's crash, a trip into the ape world's past, and Caesar's revolt. The modern four restart the story with Caesar's origin and jump centuries forward for Kingdom.

Tim Burton's 2001 film is a standalone retelling, not part of either timeline. Release order is the recommendation. The 1968 ending is one of cinema's famous twists and deserves to land unspoiled.

Good to know

Chronological order here means the reboot era first (Rise, Dawn, War, Kingdom) and then the original five, whose sequels loop through time travel back to the 1970s. Burton's film fits neither sequence, so it sits last in the chronological list as a standalone.

Kingdom is set generations after Caesar, roughly 300 years after War. The next film is uncertain: the studio eyed 2027 for a Kingdom sequel, but May 2026 reporting has Matt Shakman directing a new original story with Josh Friedman writing, possibly unconnected to Kingdom. Treat any date as tentative.
